WHAT
IS TRADITIONAL REIKI?
Reiki is a practice based on the fact that all people carry
within them a positive life energy, Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese
word meaning Universal Life Force Energy. Reiki is an ancient
healing method which dates back for over a thousand years.
The technique was rediscovered by the Japanese monk Mikao
Usui in the nineteenth century from his reading of ancient
Sanskrit writings. Usui passed on his knowledge, training
"masters" to channel this universal energy through their own
bodies as well as the bodies of others.
Reiki is spiritual, but not considered a religion. It is based
of the transfer of a universal life energy, which brings forth
all life in the universe and then nourishes it. The practitioner
balances and enhances your vital energy; in the case of illness
or general malaise, the energy is healing. To do this, the
Reiki practitioner places her hands over major organs or chakras
(the energy centers of the body). The resulting harmonious
balance aids the body in healing itself. The warmth of the
energy flow is felt during the session by both the practitioner
and recipient, and both receive the healing energy of Reiki.
Reiki is not limited to only physical ailments, it aids the
individual in all areas of life. Reiki can help break down
barriers which block one's connection to the Higher Self.
When these barriers are dissolved, we are once again united
with source and personal empowerment can be attained.
Traditional Reiki is available to all people. It is given
over normal everyday clothing in a relaxed environment, beware
of those who offer Reiki in any other way. It is a whole healing
practice for healing of the whole person and not a modality
for expression of sensuality. When you seek treatment, select
a certified Reiki practitioner. On average, a session lasts
30-60 minutes. Often, more than one application is necessary
to achieve improvement of the problem.
How
to Prepare for a Reiki Treatment
1) Go to the bathroom before a Reiki treatment for an uninterrupted,
stress-free session.
2) Wear comfortable clothing to feel relaxed and allow your
energy to flow and any blockages to be released.
3) Close your eyes and relax completely. Take deep, even breaths.
4) Focus on your center, which is located just below the navel,
and sense the natural energy flow of your body.
How
do you become a Reiki Master?
There are 4 levels of attunements and study,
each followed by hands-on training and practice. There is
a cleansing period between between each level. This
period will vary depending on the student. Each student will
receive a certificate after adequately completing each level
of study.
Level
I -
This is the introduction to Reiki and level of self care and
healing training. The student will learn the Reiki hand positions,
how Reiki energy works, the history of Reiki, and recieve
hand-outs on the areas of study covered by the instructor.
Level
II -
This intermediate training helps you to learn more about giving
care to others as well as distance healing. You will learn
the three sacred Level II healing symbols and how to use them
effectively, how to use "healing stacks," healing
wounds in the past, creating abundance, how guides assist
in Reiki healing, and receive hand-outs on the topics covered
by the instructor.
Level
IIIA
- This is the Master level. You will be given the Master Symbol
and learn new ways to use Reiki energy. You will be given
time in the session to practice the new symbol, explore what
the energy feels like, talk about what it means to be a Reiki
Master, and receive hand-outs related to study.
Level
IIIB
- This level provides information on how to pass Reiki on
to others and how to teach the Reiki system. It is for those
Reiki care givers who are inspired to teach others how to
give healing using Reiki. Completion of this level of training
is done through a series of one-on-one meetings with a Master
Teacher and opportunities to work as an assistant during other Reiki
sessions. Students will learn about alternative symbols used
by some Reiki practitioners, learn the attunement process,
talk about the responsibilities involved in being a Reiki
Master Teacher, and give practice attunements in class.
Reiki
-- Universal Life Energy
by Andrew Weil, MD
Reiki
(which is pronounced ray-key) is a form of therapeutic
touch and actually means "universal life energy"
in Japanese. Reiki practitioners use light hand placements
to channel energy to their client. The goal is to balance
and enhance the individual's energy to promote optimum
health. Developed more than 150 years ago by the Japanese
educator Mikao Usui, Reiki is based on concepts in ancient
Buddhist scriptures and is most often used as an adjunctive
treatment for acute or chronic pain. One study showed
that patients experiencing pain from a variety of conditions
found that their pain levels were significantly lowered
following a Reiki session. Reiki is also used to reduce
anxiety in patients who are preparing for surgery. To
learn more, see Reiki Energy Medicine by Libby Barnett
and Maggie Chambers (Healing Arts Press, 1996). |
